Understanding Ethiopian Coffee Grades: G1 Through G5
A technical breakdown of physical preparation standards, secondary defect tolerances, and what an export-grade Lot 251 bag guarantees.
Ethiopian coffee grading can often be confusing for international buyers. The grading system (G1 through G5) is determined entirely by physical defect counts and cup cleanliness, not inherently by flavor potential. For specialty export, Lot 251 exclusively deals in Grade 1 (0-3 defects per 300g) and Grade 2 (4-12 defects) for washed coffees. Furthermore, our internal milling specifications require an aggressive screen size separation (minimum 14/15) and a strict 10-11% moisture boundary. Understanding these metrics ensures that when you specify a contract with us, the physical preparation matches the cupping score.
