Direct Trade vs. ECX: How Lot 251 Sources Outside the Auction
Why identity preservation matters, and how bypassing the central commodity exchange ensures higher payout for washing stations.
Historically, all Ethiopian export coffee passed through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), a system built to standardize the national crop but which inherently stripped coffees of their micro-regional identity. Under updated export regulations, Lot 251 operates a direct, vertically integrated supply chain. By contracting directly with washing stations in Yirgacheffe and Harar, we preserve the exact farm-level provenance of every 60kg bag. This not only allows roasters to trace their coffee back to specific hillsides, but the removal of middle-tier bureaucracy allows us to return a 15-20% higher premium directly to the producing washing stations.
